[Review] 'OPUS: Rocket of Whispers' (by YouNa)
[OPUS: Rocket of Whispers] is an emotionally heartwarming, story-driven game. In this game, you will play as two survivors (John & Fei) in a post-apocalyptic world. John is the son of a rocket engineer and Fei is a witch who can perform special rituals. You have to help them build the space rocket so they can return their space burials to their cosmic homeland.
John explores their village to collect rocket material and Fei makes the space rocket through John the material John has secured. This game functions well without a map because you are given the approximate location of the items you need to find. Because this is a story-driven game, the missions aren't too difficult. However, it's the story that gives the game its tension.
The numerous souls in this world that have been destroyed by plagues linger in the place they last existed, each having their own stories. These souls constantly whisper to John and Fei about their desire to go into their cosmic homeland. Some good souls will help with the location of rocket parts, while other evil souls press John and Fei with malicious thoughts. Through this process, the player experiences and shares emotions of the human race, which has been unintentionally ending their lives due to the disaster. Furthermore, we have to take on the responsibilities of the only survivors.
Another attraction of this game is identifying changes in the relationship between John and Fei. Their different values often lead them into personal conflicts, but eventually they understand each other and accomplish even more. Maybe this is the kind of story you've heard before. But it's uncommon to create such a touching story with these common story components.
This game will give you about 4 hours of play time. Despite this, the ending of the game is still very lively and touching. I'll leave it to the players to form their own feelings on the ending. Nonetheless, just for the experience and the OST will make this game well worth it.
