Iconoclasts Review (by YouNa)
[PC / PS4 / Nintendo Switch]
Iconoclasts is a Metroidvania 2D action adventure game created by Joakim Sandberg, a Swedish game developer who is famous for his Noitu Love series. This game has been in development for 8 years - since 2010. You may have noticed that Iconoclasts is inspired by the developer's previous game, Ivory Springs (2007). This means that the developer has been working on this title for a very long time. So the more you play this game, the more you'll be impressed by the developer's amazing work!
The world of Iconoclasts is dominated by a gigantic & wicked religious group called 'The One Concern' who worship space worms. Furthermore, they monopolize 'Ivory Fuel', a divine substance that is the source of the world and the power source of all living things. In this rough world, you play as Robin. She is an innocent girl who helps people as an unauthorized mechanic. But don't you worry. She has stun guns & wrenches as her trusty weapons. These weapons allow the player to solve various problems in the beautiful & cruel world of Iconoclasts.
In this game, players will encounter many puzzles that they'll have to solve by using their wrenches & stun guns. But the puzzles you will face never get tiresome. The more you play this game, the more you'll become immersed. This means that the puzzles of Iconoclasts are well designed. In addition, since combat and puzzles are not played separately, users will have a fresh experience throughout the game. Especially if you use the 'Tweak' system properly, your Robin will become even more special. The boss battles are also one of the most enjoyable aspects of this game. There are various methods needed to defeat each boss and with every win, you'll have a huge sense of accomplishment.
Iconoclasts has another charm you should not miss - the story & characters of the game. Aside from the puzzles and adventures, you will encounter various unique people on your journey. There are characters who are helping each other through all their suffering and characters who give up because of the frustrations of the world. By interacting with these people, you'll become more and more immersed in this game. Eventually you'll grow to understand this world and love the game.
If you want engaging storytelling, novel puzzles, and a Metroidvania-style action adventure game along with challenging boss battles, Iconoclast will definitely be a game worth playing. You don't want to miss the beautiful pixel art & exciting music. There are so many things to love that I may not have even found them all. I strongly recommend Iconoclasts!
